Scanning Probe Microscopy of Polymeric Methyltrioxorhenium

The surface of polymeric methyltrioxorhenium was studied by scanning probe techniques. Most of the surface is found to contain randomly intersecting crystalline regions with small crystallite facets.
The edges of these facets display minimal observed step heights in good agreement with the layer spacings obtained from powder diffraction data. Moreover the consistent observation of step heights between 16 and 18~\AA{} suggests that two adjacent layers form a single step. This is explained by the preferential cleavage of van der Waals-bonded layers versus hydrogen-bonded layers of polymeric methyltrioxorhenium. (Dept480)
